Affected crops and damage. This pest primarily targets broad-leaved trees. In orchard settings, it is known to feed on fruit-bearing species such as apple and pear trees. The larvae cause significant defoliation, as they consume the leaf tissue entirely or partially, leaving behind only the veins. This feeding activity undermines the health of the trees, significantly reducing their photosynthetic capacity and overall vigor.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Stauropus basalis typically follows a seasonal pattern involving egg-laying on the leaves of host plants. The larvae pass through several developmental stages (instars) while feeding actively during the warmer months.
