Stenoma is a genus of moths belonging to the family Elachistidae. These insects are recognized in tropical agriculture as significant pests, primarily known for causing widespread damage to high-value fruit crops. Their impact on plantation productivity necessitates robust management and continuous monitoring by agricultural experts.

The primary host plant for this pest is the avocado. The larvae of Stenoma are notorious for their boring behavior, which targets developing fruits. By penetrating the fruit skin and feeding on the inner flesh, the larvae compromise the integrity of the crop, often leading to secondary infections that exacerbate the overall damage to the harvest.

The life cycle of Stenoma follows a typical holometabolous pattern: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. Adult moths are typically nocturnal, making detection difficult without specialized tools. Once the eggs hatch, the young larvae immediately seek protection within the host tissue, where they remain throughout their development, shielded from environmental stressors and predators.

The damage caused by Stenoma larvae is categorized as fruit boring. As they feed, they create irregular tunnels inside the fruit, filling them with frass. This behavior makes visual inspection difficult during the early stages of infestation. Once the damage is evident, the fruit is usually unsalvageable, leading to significant economic losses for commercial growers.
