Description
The Avocado seed moth (Stenoma catenifer) is a devastating lepidopteran pest belonging to the family Elachistidae. It is considered one of the most critical threats to avocado production in the Americas. Due to its high destructive potential, it is strictly monitored as a quarantine pest in many countries that import avocados.
This moth primarily targets the avocado tree (Persea americana). While it shows a strong preference for Persea species, it can occasionally affect other Lauraceae members. The pest's ability to focus its attack on the seed makes it particularly challenging to manage once the larvae are established within the fruit.
The life cycle begins when an adult female deposits eggs on the fruit surface. Once the larvae emerge, they bore into the fruit, creating complex galleries filled with frass. These tunnels serve as entry points for secondary infections, such as fungi, which accelerate the rotting process and render the fruit completely unmarketable.
The larvae are internal feeders, which provides them with a natural shield against predators and many conventional contact insecticides. The damage often goes unnoticed until the fruit reaches a certain stage of maturity or begins to drop prematurely. In many cases, the seed is completely destroyed, which is devastating for nurseries and germplasm conservation efforts.
