Stenoma dimorpha is a destructive species of moth belonging to the Elachistidae family (order Lepidoptera). As a specialized fruit borer, this insect is recognized as a significant threat to avocado (Persea americana) production, causing heavy losses in commercial orchards across its geographical distribution.

The host plant range of Stenoma dimorpha is primarily restricted to the avocado tree. The larvae are particularly adapted to burrowing into developing fruits. Because the pest focuses its impact on the valuable fruit tissue, it directly affects both the quality and the economic yield of the harvest, posing a constant challenge for farmers in tropical regions.

The life cycle follows a holometabolous development, consisting of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The adult moth is cryptic, typically emerging at night to mate and lay eggs on the surface of the fruit. After hatching, the neonate larvae immediately begin boring into the avocado skin to reach the succulent interior.

The damage caused by this pest is characterized by extensive tunneling through the fruit pulp. These tunnels are often filled with larval frass, which degrades the fruit and ruins its commercial value. Furthermore, the boreholes serve as entry points for various pathogens, including fungi and bacteria, which rapidly trigger decay and fruit drop, rendering the produce unsalable.

Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to maintain populations below economic thresholds. Recommended strategies include:
