Andromeda lace bug

Systematic position: The Andromeda lace bug (Stephanitis ambigua) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Tingidae. These insects are easily recognized by the intricate, lace-like pattern on their wings and pronotum, which serves as camouflage and a key taxonomic feature.

Host plants: This species is a primary pest of various ornamental shrubs and trees. It displays a strong preference for plants within the Ericaceae family, most notably rhododendrons and azaleas. In certain environments, it can also infest other deciduous plants, causing significant cosmetic and physiological decline.

Biology and life cycle: Stephanitis ambigua overwinters in the egg stage, typically deposited within the leaf tissue. As temperatures rise in spring, nymphs emerge and begin feeding on plant sap. The insect undergoes incomplete metamorphosis and may produce multiple generations per year, depending on local climate conditions, which allows populations to build up rapidly.

Nature of damage: Both adults and nymphs feed on the underside of leaves by piercing the epidermis and sucking plant sap. This feeding activity leads to the development of pale, stippled spots on the upper leaf surface, a condition often called "bronzing." Heavy infestations can lead to premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and a significant reduction in the plant's overall vigor.

Control measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial for controlling lace bug populations. Effective strategies include:

• Regular monitoring of the underside of leaves starting in late spring.
• Application of systemic insecticides that are absorbed by the plant.
