Description
Taxonomic position. The laurel lace bug (Stephanitis lauri) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Tingidae family. These insects are easily recognized by the intricate, net-like ornamentation on their pronotum and wings, which provides excellent camouflage against the foliage of their host plants.
Host plants. The primary host for this pest is the sweet bay (Laurus nobilis). While they are primarily associated with the bay laurel, they can become a significant nuisance in nurseries, botanical gardens, and residential landscapes where these evergreen shrubs are maintained in high densities.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg stage, several nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The insects typically overwinter as adults in protected areas of the tree bark. Once temperatures rise, they emerge and begin feeding and ovipositing on the undersides of leaves, ensuring that the offspring have immediate access to a food source upon hatching.
Damage and economic impact. Infestations are characterized by stippling on the upper leaf surface, where the chlorophyll has been extracted by the bugs. As the damage progresses, the leaves appear chlorotic, develop a silver or bronze sheen, and may prematurely abscise. The underside of the leaves often becomes cluttered with dark excrement, which can attract sooty mold fungi, further reducing the tree's photosynthetic capability.
Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Cultural practices such as pruning affected areas and maintaining good plant vigor can help. When chemical intervention is necessary, systemic insecticides applied as soil drenches or foliar sprays are highly effective. Rotating chemical classes is recommended to prevent the development of resistance within the insect population.
