Lace bug

The lace bug (Stephanitis oberti) is a specialized pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Tingidae. Its common name is derived from the intricate, lace-like pattern on its wings. This minute insect leads a secretive lifestyle, often remaining undetected by gardeners until significant damage to the plant tissue becomes visible.

The primary hosts for this species include members of the Rosaceae family, such as various fruit and ornamental trees. The pest shows a high degree of host specificity, feeding on the sap of vegetative plant organs, which disrupts normal metabolism and inhibits photosynthesis within the leaf tissues.

The life cycle consists of the egg, nymph, and adult stages. The insect primarily overwinters as an adult in bark crevices, leaf litter, or debris beneath the tree canopy. Upon the arrival of consistent spring warmth, the adults emerge to feed on young foliage and deposit their eggs within the leaf tissue, which provides the emerging nymphs with immediate access to food sources.

The characteristic symptoms of infestation include the appearance of numerous light or yellow stippling marks on the upper surface of the leaves, which gradually coalesce into chlorotic patches. Under conditions of heavy infestation, the leaves may prematurely yellow, wither, and drop. On the underside of the leaves, one can typically find dark fecal spots and exuviae (cast skins), which are clear diagnostic signs of infestation.

Protection strategies require an integrated approach: cultural practices, such as the removal and destruction of leaf litter and soil cultivation, are effective in reducing the overwintering population. During the growing season, if the pest population exceeds the economic threshold, the application of systemic or contact insecticides is recommended. Treatments must be thorough, ensuring the underside of the leaves is covered, as that is where the majority of the population resides.
