Stephanitis oschanini, commonly referred to as the lace bug, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Tingidae. These insects are distinguished by their ornate, lace-like wing structures, which serve as a primary identification feature for both researchers and arborists monitoring tree health.

The primary hosts for this species include various fruit-bearing trees, with a specific preference for pear (Pyrus). By feeding exclusively on the undersides of leaves, the pest remains concealed from casual observation, often allowing population numbers to reach damaging thresholds before signs of infestation become apparent.

The biological cycle of this lace bug is strictly seasonal. Adult insects hibernate in sheltered environments, such as leaf litter, bark crevices, or nearby debris, throughout the winter months. As temperatures rise in spring, they migrate to the emerging foliage to feed and initiate the reproductive cycle. Multiple generations can occur in a single growing season, contingent upon temperature and host tree vigor.

The pest causes damage by piercing plant tissues with its stylet-like mouthparts to extract sap. This feeding activity results in chlorotic stippling on the upper leaf surface. If left unmanaged, the damage progresses to widespread leaf yellowing, necrosis, and premature abscission. This defoliation significantly reduces the tree's ability to store carbohydrates, impairing overall growth and yield.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Cultural controls are essential, particularly the removal and proper disposal of leaf litter during late autumn to eliminate overwintering sites. During the growing season, chemical interventions may be necessary if infestation levels are high. Systemic insecticides are often preferred for their ability to target the insects as they feed on the sap within the leaf tissues.
