Description

The Pear lace bug (Stephanitis pyri) is a member of the Tingidae family, belonging to the Hemiptera order. It is easily identifiable by the ornate, lace-like pattern on its wings and pronotum, which serves as its primary characteristic for field diagnosis.

This pest is a significant threat to various rosaceous fruit trees. It predominantly attacks pear trees, but it also causes considerable damage to apple, quince, cherry, peach, and plum trees. Due to its feeding habits, it can become a major limiting factor for fruit production in infested areas.

The biological cycle begins in spring when overwintered adults emerge from shelters such as bark crevices and leaf litter. Females deposit eggs into the leaf tissue on the underside of foliage. Depending on climatic conditions, the bug can produce two or more generations per year, leading to rapid population growth during the peak of the growing season.

The damage caused by Stephanitis pyri is typically localized on the leaves. By sucking plant sap, these bugs cause chlorosis and white, stippled spots on the upper leaf surface. Over time, these spots coalesce, resulting in complete desiccation and premature leaf drop. The weakened tree becomes susceptible to winter injury and exhibits reduced fruit quality and yield.

Effective control measures require an integrated pest management approach. Cultural practices such as removing bark and clearing debris under trees are essential to reduce overwintering sites. During the active growth period, monitoring is critical; if thresholds are exceeded, chemical applications targeting the underside of leaves with contact and systemic insecticides are recommended.
