Description

Taxonomic classification: The Andromeda lace bug (Stephanitis takeyai) is a member of the family Tingidae within the order Hemiptera. Originally native to East Asia, this insect has become a significant invasive pest in North America and Europe, where it specifically targets broad-leaved evergreen shrubs in ornamental landscapes.

Host plants: This pest primarily infests plants of the Ericaceae family. Its preferred hosts are Pieris species, most notably Pieris japonica, as well as various species of Rhododendron and Azalea. Because these plants are staples in modern garden design, the lace bug can cause extensive economic and aesthetic damage to residential and public landscapes.

Biology and lifecycle: The insect overwinters as adults on the underside of leaves or within plant debris. In the spring, females insert eggs into the leaf tissue near the midrib. Depending on the local climate, the lace bug may produce two or more generations per year. The rapid developmental cycle allows populations to build up to destructive levels by mid-summer, especially during hot and dry weather conditions.

Damage symptoms: Damage is caused by both nymphs and adults feeding on the underside of leaves. This feeding process drains chlorophyll, resulting in a characteristic stippling or bleaching effect on the upper leaf surface. In severe infestations, leaves become mottled and may drop prematurely. Additionally, the presence of dark, sticky fecal spots on the leaf underside often encourages the growth of sooty mold, further stressing the plant.

Control measures: Management of the Andromeda lace bug requires an integrated approach. Cultural control involves ensuring plants are well-watered to withstand stress. Chemical control is often necessary for significant infestations; the application of systemic insecticides, such as those containing neonicotinoids or insecticidal soaps applied directly to the underside of the leaves, proves most effective. Frequent monitoring throughout the growing season is essential to catch the infestation early before populations explode.
