The genus Stictotarsus belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Dytiscidae. These aquatic insects can occasionally become pests in professional plant production facilities, particularly those utilizing hydroponic systems or greenhouse environments with exposed water reservoirs.

This pest primarily affects crops grown in hydroponics or aquaponics. Both adult beetles and their larvae can cause physical damage to young roots, penetrate growth substrates, and disrupt the overall health of the plant's root system, leading to stunted growth and the potential loss of seedlings.

The biology of Stictotarsus is intrinsically linked to an aquatic lifestyle. As predators, they navigate water sources easily and can colonize artificial irrigation tanks. The life cycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females typically deposit eggs into aquatic vegetation or substrate, and the highly mobile larvae progress through several instars, feeding on organic material and roots.

The primary damage is caused by the mechanical abrasion of roots and root crowns. These wounds create entry points for secondary pathogens, including various fungal and bacterial rots. Affected plants exhibit yellowing, loss of turgor, and root system decay, resulting in significant yield loss and reduced commercial viability of the crop.

Control measures require a strict focus on monitoring and system hygiene to prevent infestation. Key strategies include:
