Strangalia attenuata is a species of beetle belonging to the family Cerambycidae (longhorn beetles). This insect is primarily known as a xylophagous species that develops within the wood of various deciduous trees, making it a subject of interest in both forestry and arboriculture management.

The larvae primarily target a wide range of broad-leaved trees, including oak, birch, alder, and hazel. In some cases, they can colonize weakened fruit trees, leading to structural damage. Adult beetles are commonly found on flowering plants, where they feed on pollen and nectar, playing a minor role in pollination, which contrasts with the destructive behavior of their larvae.

The life cycle of this beetle generally spans several years, often lasting two to three years depending on environmental conditions. Females deposit eggs in bark crevices or decayed sections of the host plant. The developing larvae tunnel into the wood, creating intricate galleries that facilitate nutrient cycling in forests but cause severe degradation in managed timber or ornamental trees.

Damage caused by this pest is characterized by internal galleries packed with frass (wood dust). This activity impairs the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients, leading to physiological stress, reduced vigor, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections or wind breakage. In ornamental settings, such damage compromises the structural integrity and aesthetic value of the trees.

Management and control strategies focus on maintaining tree health and reducing population density:

• Implementing rigorous sanitary logging to remove dead, decaying, or infested wood;
• Prompt removal and disposal of wood debris and stumps to eliminate breeding sites;
