Description

The genus Subanguina is classified within the phylum Nematoda, order Tylenchida, and family Anguinidae. These organisms are highly specialized plant-parasitic nematodes known for their ability to induce the formation of galls on their host plants. As obligate parasites, they rely entirely on the tissues of the host to complete their biological cycle.

The primary hosts for these nematodes include various cereal crops, such as wheat and rye, as well as specific grass species. The presence of Subanguina is often associated with traditional agricultural practices where the same crop is cultivated repeatedly, allowing the population density of the nematode to increase significantly over time.

The life cycle is tightly synchronized with the growth of the host plant. Second-stage juveniles enter the developing plant tissues, triggering the transformation of leaves, stems, or floral primordia into distorted galls. Within these galls, the nematodes feed and develop, sheltered from predators and environmental stress, eventually producing a new generation of infective larvae.

Damage caused by these nematodes is characterized by stunted growth, leaf curling, and, most notably, the replacement of normal seeds with hard, dark galls. This directly reduces yields and significantly impacts the grain quality, as the galls are essentially empty shells packed with nematode larvae rather than grain endosperm.

  • Crop rotation using non-host species to starve the nematode population in the soil.
