Subanguina chilensis is a specialized phytoparasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Anguinidae. This microscopic pest is recognized for its ability to invade the stems and floral structures of specific grasses, leading to significant morphological changes within the host plant.

The host range is primarily limited to certain species of grasses, including the genus Alopecurus. These nematodes are endoparasites, meaning they live and feed within the plant tissues, which provides them with constant access to nutrients while causing structural damage to the stems and developing inflorescences.

The biological cycle of this nematode is complex and includes egg, four larval stages, and the adult stage. The ability of the juveniles to enter a state of cryptobiosis (a dormant phase) in dry conditions allows them to persist in the soil or in infected plant debris for extended periods, making them difficult to eradicate.

Symptoms of infestation typically include the formation of galls on stems, stunted plant height, leaf twisting, and the failure of proper seed development. The economic impact is substantial, as heavy infestations can lead to significant yield losses in affected grass fields and degrade the quality of forage or seed crops.
