This insect is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, specifically known for its ability to damage the root systems of oil palms (Elaeis guineensis). Its cryptic behavior makes it a challenging threat to manage in commercial palm oil plantations across tropical regions.

Taxonomically, the pest is classified within the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. Unlike many other members of this family that feed on foliage, the larvae of Sufetula diminutalis have evolved to exploit the root zone. This unique behavioral trait allows the larvae to remain sheltered from surface-applied pesticides, complicating traditional control strategies.

The biology of this pest revolves around its subterranean feeding habits. Adult moths lay their eggs near the base of the palm, and upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the soil to reach the roots.
