Brown-banded cockroach

The brown-banded cockroach (Supella longipalpa) is a common household insect belonging to the order Blattodea and the family Ectobiidae. While primarily a domestic pest, its preference for warm and dry environments makes it a significant threat to indoor plants, greenhouses, and botanical collections where it can thrive alongside ornamental vegetation.

This pest causes considerable damage to plants by feeding on various parts of the vegetation. Nymphs and adults are known to chew through tender leaf tissue, buds, and young shoots. In severe infestations, the insects can strip a plant of its foliage, leading to physiological stress, inhibited photosynthesis, and potential death of the specimen.

The biology of the species follows a gradual metamorphosis: egg, nymph, and adult. Females produce oothecae, which they attach to hidden surfaces, including the undersides of pots, greenhouse structures, and sometimes even the dry stems of hardy plants. The incubation period is sensitive to temperature, making greenhouse conditions ideal for rapid population expansion.

The economic impact of the brown-banded cockroach extends beyond direct herbivory. By tunneling into potting media and living among foliage, they introduce pathogenic microbes and fungi. These contaminants can induce secondary decay in plant roots and stems, often making the damage seem more severe than what is caused by direct consumption alone.

Effective management and protection strategies include a combination of sanitation and chemical controls:

• Regular inspection and manual removal of egg cases from pots and surfaces.
• Use of non-toxic sticky traps to monitor population density and identify hotspots.
• Application of bait stations containing specific insecticides like hydramethylnon or fipronil.
• Sanitizing growing areas to eliminate alternative food sources and hiding spots.
• Implementing biological controls if compatible with the specific greenhouse environment.
