Syntermes

Syntermes is a genus of termites belonging to the Termitidae family and the order Blattodea. Primarily found in South American ecosystems, these insects are known for their subterranean lifestyle and their potential to become significant pests in commercial agricultural environments.

These termites are particularly known to attack key agricultural crops, including corn, rice, sugarcane, and eucalyptus plantations. By targeting the root systems and the subterranean parts of the stem, they severely disrupt the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients, leading to crop failure.

The biology of Syntermes involves the construction of complex underground nests and a highly social structure divided into castes: workers, soldiers, and the reproductive royal pair. Their ability to maintain stable populations in the soil allows them to persist across various planting seasons, making them a recurring problem for farmers.

The primary damage caused by these insects is the destruction of young root systems, which can lead to wilting and the total loss of individual plants in a field. Because the damage occurs underground, the presence of the infestation often goes unnoticed until the plants begin to collapse or show clear signs of nutrient deficiency.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Syntermes infestations. Effective measures include the application of chemical seed treatments, strategic tillage to disturb nest structures, and the use of baiting stations. Furthermore, maintaining good soil health and crop rotation can help reduce the suitability of the field as a habitat for these termites.
