Five-banded horse fly

Tabanus quinquevittatus

Description

Systematic position. The five-banded horse fly (Tabanus quinquevittatus) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tabanidae. It is a robust species known for its significant impact on animal health. Its classification highlights its evolutionary adaptation as an obligate parasite of large mammals.

Host range. While these flies do not feed on plant tissues, they target agricultural livestock, including cattle, horses, and sheep. Their presence in pastures can lead to severe disturbances in grazing patterns, causing animals to move frequently to avoid the flies, which indirectly impacts the efficiency of pastoral land use.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically deposited on aquatic vegetation. Upon hatching, the carnivorous larvae live in moist soil or near water bodies, feeding on various small invertebrates. Once the pupal stage is completed, adult females emerge to search for blood meals, which are necessary for egg production.

Damage character and economic impact. The feeding habit of Tabanus quinquevittatus is highly traumatic for livestock. Bites cause significant pain, irritation, and secondary bacterial infections. Beyond physical damage, the constant harassment of herds results in decreased weight gain and lowered milk production. They also act as vectors for various pathogens including anthrax and tularemia.

Control measures. Management of these pests requires an integrated approach:

  • Application of topical repellents and pour-on insecticides on livestock.
  • Installation of visual or chemical traps in field environments to reduce local populations.
  • Providing shaded shelters where cattle can hide from sunlight and flies.
  • Habitat modification, such as draining stagnant water pools, to limit larval development sites.
