Taiwan whitefly (genus Taiwanaleyrodes) is a member of the Aleyrodidae family within the order Hemiptera. These insects are recognized as significant agricultural pests globally, known for their ability to thrive in various climatic conditions and colonize a wide range of host plants, including ornamentals and essential crops.

The host range of Taiwanaleyrodes is diverse. These pests primarily target the underside of leaves, where they insert their stylets to feed on phloem sap. This feeding behavior drains the plant of essential nutrients, leading to physiological stress, stunted growth, and a noticeable decline in the overall vigor of the host plant.

The life cycle follows a hemimetabolous pattern: egg, multiple larval stages (crawlers), puparium, and adult. The crawler stage is the most mobile, allowing the pest to move within the plant canopy. Once the puparium stage is reached, the insect becomes stationary and undergoes transformation into an adult, which can then fly to colonize adjacent plants.

Damages are characterized by chlorosis, leaf yellowing, and deformation. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which creates a dark film on the leaf surface, blocking sunlight and severely inhibiting photosynthesis. In severe infestations, this can lead to premature leaf drop and potential crop failure.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial for controlling this pest. Strategies include:

• Installing yellow sticky traps to monitor and reduce adult populations.
• Encouraging natural predators such as ladybugs and lacewings.
• Applying insecticidal soaps or horticultural oils for direct contact control.
• Using systemic insecticides for severe outbreaks, ensuring compliance with safety intervals.

Effective prevention also involves maintaining proper sanitation practices, such as removing weeds and crop residues that may act as overwintering sites. Ensuring adequate plant spacing improves air circulation, which creates a less favorable microclimate for whitefly colonization and reproduction.
