Taiwan whitefly

Taiwanaleyrodes indica is a species of whitefly belonging to the Aleyrodidae family within the order Hemiptera. This pest is known for colonizing various plant hosts, particularly in subtropical and tropical environments. Its ability to infest plants rapidly makes it a significant concern for both greenhouse production and ornamental landscaping.

The host range of this insect includes a variety of woody and herbaceous plants. Taiwanaleyrodes indica is frequently reported on citrus species, various ornamental trees, and indoor foliage plants. Because they feed on sap, the pests cause localized yellowing, chlorosis, and general decline of the plant's health, impacting overall development and vitality.

The biology of the pest follows a typical whitefly development pattern, consisting of the egg, four larval instars, and the winged adult stage. The initial larval stage, often called a crawler, moves actively across the leaf surface to locate a suitable feeding site. Once attached, the insect transitions through subsequent stages, during which it remains stationary and feeds on plant phloem.

Damage assessment involves recognizing both direct and indirect effects. Direct damage occurs through nutrient depletion, while indirect damage is associated with honeydew excretion. This sticky substance encourages the growth of sooty mold, which coats the foliage, interferes with photosynthesis, and significantly degrades the plant's aesthetic and economic value.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling this whitefly.
