The Roman mole (Latin Talpa romana) is a mammal classified under the order Eulipotyphla and the family Talpidae. It is characterized by its robust build and specialized forelimbs, which allow it to navigate through dense Mediterranean soils efficiently while feeding on subterranean invertebrates.
This pest is a significant nuisance for agricultural and ornamental plants. While its diet consists primarily of earthworms and insect larvae, it severely damages the roots of vegetables, flowers, and nursery saplings by creating complex tunnel networks that lift plants out of the soil or expose their root systems to air.
Regarding its biology, the Roman mole is active year-round and does not hibernate. Reproduction occurs annually, typically in the spring, with the population expanding rapidly due to the mole's high metabolic rate and constant foraging activity. Their territorial nature means a single individual can quickly ruin a well-manicured lawn or vegetable bed.
The damage caused by Roman moles is primarily structural and physiological. Plants die not because they are eaten, but because their root contact with the soil is severed, causing dehydration. Moreover, the characteristic molehills created on the surface lead to severe soil degradation and disrupt irrigation systems.
Effective protection measures against Roman moles include:
- Deploying ultrasonic or mechanical vibratory repellents to deter the animals.
- Installing underground mesh barriers around the perimeter of flowerbeds and lawns.
- Using professional live traps for humanely relocating individuals.
- Cultivating plants with natural repellent properties, such as Fritillaria imperialis, in target areas.
