Tarsonemid mites (genus Tarsonemus) are microscopic arachnids belonging to the family Tarsonemidae, within the order Trombidiformes. These pests are extremely difficult to detect with the naked eye due to their minute size, typically measuring less than 0.3 mm in length.

These mites are significant pests affecting a wide variety of agricultural and horticultural crops. They frequently infest strawberries, cyclamens, various ornamental plants, and vegetable crops grown in greenhouses, where they can cause severe reduction in yield and plant vigor.

The biology and life cycle of Tarsonemus species involve stages of egg, larva, quiescent nymph (nymphochrysalis), and adult. Under favorable greenhouse conditions with high humidity and moderate temperatures, their population can increase exponentially, with a complete generation cycle completed in under two weeks.

The damage caused by these mites typically manifests as deformed, crinkled, or brittle leaves, stunted shoot tips, and blackened or distorted flower buds. Because the mites feed on developing tissues, the entire structure of the plant may be compromised, leading to poor development and fruit set.

Effective management requires a combination of strict sanitation, regular crop monitoring, and timely chemical intervention. Since standard insecticides are often ineffective against mites, specialized acaricides should be used as part of an integrated pest management program to prevent chemical resistance.
