Mushroom bulb mite
Tarsonemus myceliophagus
Description
Mushroom bulb mite (Tarsonemus myceliophagus) is a microscopic pest belonging to the Tarsonemidae family. It is a highly specialized mite that primarily inhabits mushroom-growing substrates, causing significant economic losses in the commercial mushroom industry worldwide.
The primary host for this mite is the cultivated mushroom (Agaricus bisporus). The mites live within the mycelium, feeding on the fungal hyphae. Due to their extremely small size and transparency, they often go unnoticed until significant damage to the crop has already occurred.
The biology of Tarsonemus myceliophagus is characterized by rapid reproduction rates. Under favorable conditions, particularly in the warm and humid environment of a mushroom house, the population can explode within weeks. They are easily dispersed throughout the growing facility via air currents, worker tools, and contaminated casing soil.
The damage caused by these mites is systemic. By piercing the fungal hyphae and extracting their cell contents, they inhibit the growth of the mushroom crop. Heavily infested areas show symptoms of necrotic mycelium, which loses its white color and becomes brown or yellowish, eventually leading to a complete cessation of mushroom fruit body formation.
- Steam pasteurization of compost and casing material
- Strict hygiene protocols for farm staff and equipment
- Installation of mite-proof filters on ventilation systems
- Regular microscopic monitoring of substrate samples
- Immediate removal and disposal of infested patches
Effective management of this pest focuses entirely on prevention. Since chemical treatments are severely restricted in mushroom houses due to safety and residue concerns, growers must prioritize strict sanitation and thermal treatment of the substrate. If an infestation is detected, containment and rapid removal are crucial to saving the remainder of the crop.
