Description

Systematic position. This species belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Tingidae, commonly known as lace bugs. They are characterized by their intricate, lace-like sculpturing on the dorsal surface, which provides excellent camouflage against host plant foliage.

Host plants. The primary host for Teleonemia belfragii is the Lantana camara plant. While it is often studied as a biocontrol agent against invasive lantana in various global regions, it can become a pest in ornamental gardens where lantana is valued for its flowers and aesthetic appeal.

Biology and life cycle. The insect undergoes incomplete metamorphosis (hemimetabolous), passing through egg, nymph, and adult stages. Eggs are inserted into the leaf tissue, specifically along the veins. Under favorable climatic conditions, the population can increase rapidly, completing several generations within a single growing season.

Damage and economic impact. Both nymphs and adults are sap-suckers. They aggregate on the undersides of leaves, causing chlorosis, stippling, and eventual necrosis. Severe infestations often lead to premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and a significant reduction in the decorative quality of the host plants.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest.
