Description
The lantana lace bug (Teleonemia scrupulosa) is an insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Tingidae. Originally native to the Neotropics, this species has been widely studied and introduced into various parts of the world as a biological control agent to combat the invasive weed Lantana camara.
The primary host for this pest is the Lantana genus. While it is utilized for weed management, in managed environments such as greenhouses or botanical gardens, it can become a damaging pest that attacks ornamental species within the Verbenaceae family, causing significant aesthetic and physiological harm.
The biological lifecycle consists of egg, nymphal stages, and adult. The females insert their eggs into the veins of the leaves or young stems. Under optimal conditions, the life cycle is rapid, allowing for multiple generations per year, which can lead to quick population explosions if environmental conditions are favorable.
Damage is caused by both adults and nymphs feeding on the underside of leaves by piercing the epidermis and sucking the sap. This activity results in characteristic stippling, chlorosis, and eventual browning of the leaves. Severe infestations lead to premature leaf drop, stunted shoot development, and a reduction in the plant's overall vigor.
To effectively manage populations of Teleonemia scrupulosa in cultivated areas, the following strategies are recommended:
