Erythrina moth

The Erythrina moth (scientific name Terastia meticulosalis) is a moth species belonging to the family Crambidae, order Lepidoptera. This insect is widely recognized as a serious pest specifically targeting plants within the Erythrina genus, commonly known as coral trees, and is a significant concern for arborists and gardeners in tropical regions.

The larvae of this moth are stem and flower borers. They primarily feed on the developing buds, flowers, and terminal shoots of the host plants. By boring into the soft tissues, the larvae disrupt the plant's development, often causing the terminal buds to wither, die, or grow in a distorted fashion, which significantly ruins the tree's appearance.

The life cycle of Terastia meticulosalis involves a complete metamorphosis. Adult females lay eggs on the tender parts of the host plant. Once hatched, the larvae immediately bore into the stem or flower stalks, where they spend most of their developmental period protected from the environment and predators, making them difficult to control once established inside the plant tissue.

Visible damage symptoms include stunted growth, the presence of frass (larval waste) near entry holes on stems, and the premature shedding of floral parts. The primary harm is the loss of aesthetic value and the impairment of the tree's reproductive ability, which can be devastating for ornamental parks and the propagation of coral tree seedlings in nurseries.

Effective management strategies for this pest include:

• Sanitary pruning: removing and destroying infested stems to eliminate larvae before they pupate.
• Systemic insecticides: applying products that are absorbed by the plant to target larvae hidden inside the stem.
• Monitoring: utilizing pheromone or light traps to determine adult population levels for better timing of treatments.
• Biological control: encouraging local parasitic wasps that naturally predate on moth larvae and eggs.
