Description

The classic termite (Termes classicus) is a species of social insect belonging to the order Isoptera and the family Termitidae. These insects live in complex colonial structures characterized by a strict division of labor among castes, including workers, soldiers, and reproductive individuals. In agricultural ecosystems, they represent a persistent threat to woody plants and various crops in tropical and subtropical regions.

This pest infests a wide range of agricultural crops, including cocoa, coffee, fruit trees, and various industrial plant species. Beyond direct damage to living tissues, classic termites frequently destroy irrigation infrastructure, wooden crop supports, and stored agricultural products, as their primary food source is cellulose.

The biological cycle follows a process of hemimetabolous development. The colony's survival is heavily dependent on cellulose digestion, facilitated by specialized symbiotic protozoa residing within the termite's gut. During the swarming phase, reproductive alates leave the parent nest to establish new colonies in soil or within suitable organic substrates.

The damage caused by this pest is often insidious, characterized by the excavation of galleries inside roots, trunks, and stems. Because the external surface of the plant remains largely intact until the structural damage is severe, it is difficult to detect the infestation early. This internal destruction disrupts vascular integrity, leading to plant wilting, increased susceptibility to secondary fungal pathogens, and eventual tree death.

Management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key measures include:

  • Application of soil-applied insecticides (e.g., fipronil) to create protective barriers around fields.
  • Installation of baiting systems to monitor and eliminate foraging termite colonies.
  • Proper sanitation, including the removal of dead wood and plant residues from the field.
  • Use of termite-resistant materials for irrigation and support structures.

Continuous monitoring during the peak swarming seasons is essential for early intervention. If infestations are discovered, rapid treatment of the specific area or nest site is necessary to prevent the further spread of the colony across the entire cultivated plot.
