Formosan subterranean termite

The Formosan subterranean termite (Coptotermes formosanus) is a species of insect in the order Blattodea and the family Rhinotermitidae. It is widely considered one of the most destructive termite species globally, capable of colonizing large areas and attacking both structures and living vegetation.

This pest targets a wide variety of woody plants, including orchard trees and ornamental shrubs. By consuming cellulose within the heartwood and sapwood, these termites compromise the structural integrity of the plant, often leading to canopy thinning, branch dieback, or tree collapse.

The biology of Coptotermes formosanus involves massive, interconnected colonies that can survive in soil and move long distances to reach a food source. Their life cycle consists of eggs, nymphs, and distinct castes: workers, soldiers, and reproductives, all working together to expand the colony's territory.

Damage caused by these termites is often insidious. They create mud tubes on the exterior of tree trunks to maintain humidity levels required for their survival. Inside the plant, they create extensive galleries, which are usually discovered only when the tree exhibits sudden signs of decline or structural failure.

Control measures are essential for prevention and include the following strategies:

• Installation of baiting systems containing chitin synthesis inhibitors.
• Application of soil-applied termiticides around tree bases.
• Removal of dead wood and debris from the vicinity of healthy trees.
• Regular inspection for mud tunnels and hollow sounding trunk sections.

Effective management requires a proactive approach, integrating monitoring and chemical control to prevent colonization. Because they are highly resilient, ongoing surveillance is necessary to ensure the protection of high-value landscapes and agricultural assets.
