Horn's termite

Horn's termite (Termes horni) is a species of termite belonging to the order Blattodea and the family Termitidae. These social insects are highly organized, maintaining complex colonies that allow them to exploit diverse food sources, including live plant tissues and cellulose-rich agricultural crops.

The species is primarily recognized as a significant pest in tropical Asian regions. It is known to cause substantial damage to various important crops, such as tea bushes and coconut palms. By targeting the root systems and the heartwood of the trees, Termes horni poses a continuous threat to agricultural productivity.

The biological cycle is defined by a caste system where workers and soldiers play distinct roles in colony survival. These termites construct extensive subterranean gallery systems. Their ability to tunnel through soil and wood allows them to access plant vascular systems, which significantly stresses the plant and predisposes it to secondary fungal infections.

Damage caused by this pest is often insidious, as much of the activity occurs beneath the soil surface. Typical symptoms include the sudden wilting of plants, loss of vigor, and the presence of earthen tunnels along the stems or roots. If left untreated, the damage can lead to the total collapse of the plant structure.
