The Javan termite (Termes javanicus) belongs to the order Isoptera and the family Termitidae. As a highly social insect, it lives in sophisticated subterranean or mound-building colonies, playing a significant role in the ecosystem as a decomposer, but becoming a destructive pest in agricultural environments.
This species primarily targets various woody plants, causing major losses in sectors such as rubber (Hevea), tea, and coconut plantations. It is also known to infest orchard trees and nursery stock, especially in regions where agricultural land encroaches on tropical forest habitats.
The biology of the species centers on its caste system, where workers perform the destructive task of consuming cellulose. The life cycle involves egg, nymph, and adult stages. They prefer high-humidity environments and often utilize underground tunnels to gain access to the root systems of healthy plants, effectively bypassing surface defenses.
Damage is typically characterized by the hollowing out of roots and trunks. Because the insects often work internally, the damage is frequently hidden until the plant shows signs of sudden wilting or structural collapse. The economic impact is severe due to the loss of long-lived perennial crops and the difficulty of detecting infestations early.
Effective management strategies include:
- Removal of potential nesting sites, such as rotting wood, stumps, and debris, from the planting area.
- Applying soil-incorporated insecticides to prevent entry into the root zone.
