Termes latericus is a species of termite belonging to the order Isoptera and the family Termitidae. This social insect is characterized by a cryptic, subterranean lifestyle, which makes early detection within agricultural fields or woody areas extremely challenging for growers.
This pest primarily infests woody crops, dead wood, and can cause significant damage to the root systems of various plants in arid environments. Under intensive farming conditions, termites may consume organic matter and shift to feeding on living plant tissues if their natural food sources become scarce.
The biology of Termes latericus involves a complex caste system typical of higher termites. Colonies grow gradually, passing through egg, larval, and nymphal stages. Reproduction is facilitated by alates, which engage in nuptial flights to establish new colonies within the soil or deep inside wooden structures.
