Common termite

The common termite (Termes vulgaris) is a member of the order Isoptera and the family Termitidae. These highly social insects are organized into distinct castes, including workers, soldiers, and reproductive individuals. While primarily recognized as decomposers, certain species under this classification pose a significant threat to agriculture by attacking live plant tissues in tropical and subtropical regions.

This pest affects a wide range of crops, including fruit trees, coffee shrubs, sugarcane, and various legumes. Termites are particularly destructive to crops with woody stems or fleshy roots, as they provide an ideal environment for feeding and nest construction. In many agricultural settings, termites are considered a primary cause of seedling mortality and orchard degradation.

The biological cycle of the colony is governed by a queen and king, with workers performing the labor of foraging and infrastructure development. The insects construct intricate tunnel systems within the soil and inside plant stalks, which allows them to bypass external defensive mechanisms of the plant. They thrive in environments with sufficient moisture and access to cellulose-rich plant material.

Damage is characterized by the internal hollowing of stems, roots, and trunks. As termites consume the cellulose inside, the structural integrity of the plant is compromised, leading to stunted growth, wilting, and often the death of the plant during periods of drought or stress. Their presence is frequently signaled by the appearance of mud tubes on the surface of stems or bark.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

• Regular field inspections to identify the presence of mud tubes or tunnel damage.
• Soil drenching with systemic insecticides to create a protective barrier around the root zone.
• Implementing integrated pest management (IPM) techniques including the use of termite-resistant plant varieties.
• Application of baiting systems that utilize slow-acting insecticides to ensure the eradication of the entire nest.
