Tessaratoma

Tessaratoma is a genus of insects belonging to the family Tessaratomidae, often referred to as giant shield bugs. These insects are significant agricultural pests in tropical and subtropical regions. The most economically damaging species, Tessaratoma papillosa, is known for its severe impact on the production of various fruit-bearing trees.

The primary hosts for these bugs include members of the Sapindaceae family, most notably litchi and longan. Infestations occur when the adults and nymphs congregate on shoots, flower stalks, and developing fruit. Their feeding habits extract essential plant fluids, causing the tree significant metabolic stress and reducing its overall health.

The life cycle of the Tessaratoma consists of egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically laid in distinct clusters on the underside of leaves. Nymphs are gregarious and remain in groups during their early stages. As they develop, they move throughout the tree canopy, continuously feeding and causing extensive damage to the new growth.

The damage caused by Tessaratoma is multifaceted. Direct feeding leads to flower drop, immature fruit drop, and branch dieback. Furthermore, the bugs secrete a pungent, caustic substance as a defense mechanism, which can cause chemical burns on the leaf surface and facilitate the colonization of opportunistic fungi, further degrading the tree's health.

Management of Tessaratoma requires an integrated approach. Effective strategies include regular orchard scouting to identify egg clusters and nymphs early. While chemical control with systemic insecticides is common, it should be managed carefully to avoid disrupting natural predators and parasitoids. Cultural practices, such as pruning affected areas, remain essential for control.
