Description
Taxonomy: The Lychee giant stink bug (Tessaratoma papillosa) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Tessaratomidae. It is a major agricultural pest known for causing severe economic losses in lychee and longan orchards across its distribution range in Asia.
Host crops: This insect primarily feeds on plants within the family Sapindaceae. Its main economic hosts are the lychee tree (Litchi chinensis) and the longan tree (Dimocarpus longan), though it can occasionally be found on other related tropical fruit trees.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle includes the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Females typically lay eggs in clusters on the underside of leaves. The population development is highly correlated with seasonal temperatures, with overwintering adults becoming active as soon as new host growth appears in spring.
Damage and economic impact: Both adults and nymphs feed by piercing plant tissues with their proboscis to suck sap. This feeding causes the wilting of new shoots, flower abortion, fruit drop, and shriveling. Furthermore, the bugs secrete an irritating fluid that burns plant tissue and encourages the growth of sooty mold, which covers leaves and reduces photosynthesis.
Control measures: Implementing a management strategy is essential to prevent heavy yield losses:

- Pruning of infested branches and maintaining tree hygiene to improve airflow.
