Tetraleurodes citriculus is a significant plant pest classified within the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. As a specialized phytophagous insect, it primarily impacts citrus orchards, posing a persistent threat to commercial fruit production in various subtropical regions worldwide.

The primary hosts of this pest include various species of the Citrus genus, such as lemons, oranges, and mandarins. While citrus crops are the preferred targets, the pest can also inhabit a range of other host plants, complicating control efforts in areas with high botanical diversity and intensive cultivation practices.

The lifecycle of Tetraleurodes citriculus includes an egg stage, four larval instars, and an adult stage. Female insects typically deposit eggs on the abaxial side of young, succulent leaves. Following eclosion, the first-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, move briefly before settling down to feed. Subsequent larval stages are sessile, remaining firmly attached to the plant surface throughout their development.

Damage caused by this insect is primarily due to sap-sucking, which depletes the plant's resources. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold on the foliage. This layer of fungus hinders photosynthesis and gas exchange, leading to leaf drop, stunted shoot development, and a marked reduction in the overall quality and quantity of the fruit yield.

Effective management of Tetraleurodes citriculus requires an integrated approach to pest management:

• Regular monitoring of orchard populations using yellow sticky traps.
• Biological control through the preservation or introduction of natural predators and parasitoids.
• Targeted application of insecticides during the early nymphal stages when insects are most vulnerable.
• Cultural practices, such as pruning, to maintain an open canopy and lower humidity levels within the orchard environment.
