Mulberry whitefly

The mulberry whitefly (Tetraleurodes mori) is a pest species belonging to the family Aleyrodidae, within the order Hemiptera. While it is named after its common host, the mulberry tree, it is a polyphagous insect capable of infesting a diverse range of woody plants, shrubs, and trees across various temperate and subtropical climates.

The life cycle of the mulberry whitefly begins with eggs laid on the undersides of leaves. The subsequent larval stages are sessile, meaning they anchor themselves to the leaf surface to feed continuously. As they mature, these larvae develop a distinctive, darkened, scale-like covering, which distinguishes them from many other common whitefly species found in garden environments.

This pest targets numerous plant species, including mulberry, citrus, holly, and various oak varieties. By inserting their piercing-sucking mouthparts into the plant tissue, they extract essential sap, which directly impacts the plant's vigor. Severe infestations often cause foliage to turn chlorotic, wilt, and eventually drop prematurely, significantly weakening the plant host.

A major indirect threat posed by this insect is the excretion of honeydew. This sticky substance serves as an ideal medium for the colonization of sooty mold, a type of fungus that covers leaves in a black, soot-like layer. This coating severely restricts light absorption and interferes with the plant's photosynthetic capacity, often leading to reduced growth and decreased overall agricultural productivity.

Management of the mulberry whitefly requires a multi-faceted approach. Cultural practices such as proper pruning for improved airflow and the removal of heavily infested plant parts are essential. Chemical control is effective when using systemic insecticides applied during the early crawler stage. Furthermore, encouraging natural predators, such as lady beetles and parasitic wasps, can help maintain population levels below the economic threshold.
