Avocado whitefly

Tetraleurodes perseae is a species of whitefly belonging to the family Aleyrodidae, order Hemiptera. This insect is recognized as a significant pest in avocado-growing regions, where it impacts plant health and overall agricultural productivity through its persistent feeding habits.

The primary host for this pest is the avocado (Persea americana). Due to its adaptability, it can occasionally thrive on other vegetation in close proximity to orchards. Understanding the host range is critical for integrated pest management programs to prevent the spread of the insect to adjacent susceptible plant species.

The biology of Tetraleurodes perseae follows the typical whitefly life cycle: egg, multiple nymphal instars, pupa, and adult. The nymphs are sedentary and reside on the underside of leaves, where they extract plant sap. The adult insects are winged and capable of flight, facilitating the spread of the infestation within and between orchards.

The damage caused by this whitefly is twofold. Firstly, the direct removal of nutrients leads to leaf yellowing and stunted tree growth. Secondly, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, a fungus that covers the leaf surface, effectively blocking photosynthesis and reducing the market quality of the fruit produced.

Effective management requires a combination of strategies:

• Regular field monitoring to detect early populations;
• Encouragement of natural predators and parasitoids;
• Implementation of pruning practices to increase canopy airflow;
• Targeted use of chemical controls when population levels exceed acceptable thresholds.
