Heather whitefly

The heather whitefly, scientifically known as Tetralicia ericae, is a species within the family Aleyrodidae, order Hemiptera. It is a specialized pest that primarily targets plants belonging to the Ericaceae family. While it is often found on native heather species, it can cause significant aesthetic and physiological damage in horticultural settings.

The primary host plants for this pest include various species of Erica. The insects prefer the microclimate found within dense heather thickets. In controlled environments or ornamental gardens, they can thrive if the humidity remains high and air circulation is restricted, creating an ideal breeding ground for the population.

The biology of Tetralicia ericae follows a classic whitefly developmental pattern, passing through egg, nymphal (larval), and adult stages. Nymphs are sessile and translucent, making them difficult to spot on the underside of foliage. They survive the winter in the nymphal stage, protecting themselves within the dense structure of the host plant.

Damage caused by this whitefly is twofold: direct feeding damage and secondary fungal infections. As they feed, they suck sap from the leaves, causing chlorosis and vigor loss. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats the foliage in a black, powdery substance that inhibits photosynthesis.

To manage Tetralicia ericae effectively, an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy is required. This involves physical removal of infested foliage, improvement of air ventilation within plant clusters, and the application of systemic insecticides when necessary. Chemical treatments should be timed precisely with the emergence of the first instar nymphs.
