Description
The genus Tetramorium belongs to the family Formicidae, order Hymenoptera. While commonly observed, certain species within this group are recognized as significant pests in agricultural and horticultural environments. They are adaptable insects that can establish large, complex colonies in various soil types, frequently interacting with cultivated crops.
These ants affect a wide range of host plants, including vegetable crops, nursery stock, and ornamental varieties. They are particularly detrimental to seeds and young seedlings, often causing direct damage by consuming the seeds or disrupting root development. Their presence can severely inhibit the establishment of a healthy crop stand.
The biology of Tetramorium involves a high degree of social organization with complex life cycles consisting of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Indirectly, their mutualistic relationship with honeydew-secreting insects, such as aphids and mealybugs, causes severe infestations of these sap-sucking pests, which transmit viral diseases.
