Pavement ant

The pavement ant (Tetramorium caespitum) is a member of the Hymenoptera order and the Formicidae family. It is a common species that frequently constructs nests in the soil near plant roots, under stones, or in pavement cracks. These small, dark-colored ants are highly active foragers that can cause significant disruption in both agricultural fields and home gardens.

In terms of agricultural impact, these ants are known to feed on the roots of young seedlings, affecting the development of various vegetable and grain crops. Furthermore, their symbiotic relationship with aphids makes them a serious secondary pest. By protecting aphids from predators, they facilitate severe infestations that weaken fruit trees and ornamental shrubs by extracting essential sap.

The biology and lifecycle of this ant involve a queen-headed colony structure where the queen lays eggs in underground chambers. Larvae are nurtured by worker ants until they reach adulthood. A single colony can grow quite large, and their foraging activity peaks during warm spring and summer months, as they constantly expand their tunnel networks to secure food resources.

The damage caused by Tetramorium caespitum is primarily related to root system disruption and direct fruit consumption. They can cause seedlings to wilt and die by gnawing on their tender root structures. In strawberry patches and other ground-level crops, the ants often feed on the ripening fruit, causing visible holes and rendering the produce unmarketable.
