The Smith ant (Tetramorium smithi) is a member of the Hymenoptera order and the Formicidae family. This species of small ground-dwelling ants has successfully adapted to agricultural environments, where they are considered harmful organisms that interfere with crop development.

These ants primarily inhabit loose soils, often damaging the root systems of vegetable crops, seedlings, and young trees. Beyond direct mechanical damage, they act as active protectors and dispersers of aphids, which leads to secondary infestations and the spread of various plant viruses and fungal diseases throughout the field.

The biology of Tetramorium smithi is characterized by complex colony social structures and high reproductive rates during the growing season. The developmental cycle includes egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Their subterranean nest-building activities significantly disrupt soil structure, reducing the nutrient absorption efficiency of plant roots.
