This species is native to East Asia, primarily inhabiting moist environments such as riverbanks, wetlands, and damp grasslands. This pest primarily attacks the young seedlings of various agricultural crops, including cereals and vegetables. During the germination stage, the delicate tissues of the sprouts are highly susceptible to feeding. High populations of the pest can quickly destroy entire stands of crops if left unmonitored during the early growth stages.
The biological cycle of Tetrix japonica involves incomplete metamorphosis. They typically overwinter as adults or late-stage nymphs in leaf litter, debris, or shallow soil layers.
