Description

The common groundhopper (Tetrix undulata) is a member of the order Orthoptera and the family Tetrigidae. These small insects are distinguished by their pronotum, which extends backward over the abdomen, and their ability to blend perfectly into the soil or leaf litter. Unlike grasshoppers, they lack arolia (pads between their claws), which limits their movement to walking rather than jumping across vegetation.

This species is not typically classified as a major agricultural pest, but it can cause damage under specific conditions. Their primary diet includes detritus, mosses, algae, and lichens. However, in nurseries, greenhouses, or moist agricultural fields, they may feed on young plant seedlings. This grazing behavior can cause noticeable holes or frayed edges on leaves, which may stunt the growth of young vegetable crops.

The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis. Adults and late-instar nymphs usually overwinter in leaf litter, moss, or under forest debris. Activity begins in early spring, as temperatures rise and soil moisture levels become optimal. Females deposit eggs in the soil. Given their preference for moist environments, these insects are most abundant in fields with high humidity or poor soil drainage.

Damage occurs primarily during the seedling stage. While the impact of an individual insect is negligible, high local populations can result in significant thinning of crop stands. The damage is often most visible on tender crops that are slow to establish, as the groundhoppers consume leaf tissue before the plants can develop a robust root system and thicker stems.

Integrated pest management (IPM) for this species focuses on habitat modification to make the environment less favorable for them:

  • improving field drainage to reduce soil moisture levels;
  • removing dense moss and weed growth that provides habitat;
  • regular soil cultivation to disrupt egg-laying sites;
  • monitoring crop stands in nurseries and applying insecticides only if infestation thresholds are exceeded.
