The genus Theba belongs to the family Helicidae, order Stylommatophora. These terrestrial pulmonate gastropods are recognized as significant pests in agriculture and horticulture, particularly in regions where environmental humidity remains high enough to support their active feeding cycles.

These mollusks affect a diverse range of host plants, including leafy vegetables (lettuce, cabbage), tomatoes, ornamental plants, and young fruit tree saplings. They feed on the epidermis and parenchyma of leaves, stems, and fruits, often causing extensive defoliation and internal structural damage.

The biology of Theba is intrinsically linked to moisture availability. They are nocturnal by nature, retreating into cool, damp soil or sheltered areas during hot, dry periods. Their life cycle involves laying eggs in moist soil substrates, followed by rapid larval growth and maturation, which allows them to build up large population densities quickly.

Agricultural damage is characterized by ragged holes in foliage, loss of fruit quality, and the presence of mucous trails that contaminate the crop surface. This damage not only reduces yield quantity but also significantly impacts marketability and creates entry points for secondary pathogens, leading to crop decay.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Cultural controls, such as reducing ground cover vegetation and maintaining good soil drainage, are essential. Mechanical barriers, including copper tapes or grit mulches, provide protection for small areas, while chemical control involving molluscicides based on metaldehyde or iron phosphate is used during severe infestations.
