Thosea asigna is a moth species belonging to the family Limacodidae, commonly known as the nettle caterpillar or slug moth. These insects are recognized as significant agricultural pests in tropical regions. The adult moths are relatively inconspicuous, while the larvae, with their slug-like appearance and stinging hairs, are the primary focus of control efforts.

The primary hosts for this pest include oil palms, coconut palms, and cacao trees. Economic damage is particularly severe in industrial plantation settings where monoculture systems allow the pest population to expand rapidly. The larval stage is responsible for all the damage to the crops, as adults typically do not cause direct harm to plant foliage.

The life cycle of Thosea asigna consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay clusters of eggs on the underside of host leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae go through several instars. The stinging hairs on their bodies are a notable biological feature, as they contain toxins that act as a deterrent to most avian and predatory insect species.

The nature of damage is characterized by severe defoliation. Early-stage larvae skeletonize the leaves, consuming the epidermis, while older larvae devour the entire leaf blade. A significant infestation can lead to total defoliation of the crown, which severely stunts plant growth, reduces fruit production, and renders the trees more susceptible to secondary infections or environmental stress.
