Description
The lead slug caterpillar (Thosea plumbea) is a destructive pest belonging to the Limacodidae family within the order Lepidoptera. Primarily found in Southeast Asia, this insect poses a significant threat to various agricultural commodities, with a particular economic impact on tea plantations and tropical fruit orchards.
The damage is caused by the larval stage, known for its slug-like appearance, characterized by a flattened, broad body lacking typical prolegs. The caterpillars are densely covered in urticating hairs connected to venom glands, which can cause severe skin irritation and pain if handled by farm workers or humans.
This pest affects a wide range of host plants, most notably tea (Camellia sinensis), but also coffee, cocoa, citrus, and coconut trees. The larvae feed voraciously on leaves, often skeletonizing them and leaving only the midribs intact, which severely reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity and leads to significant yield losses.
The life cycle of Thosea plumbea consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. Females deposit eggs on the undersides of leaves. Pupation occurs within hard, round cocoons firmly attached to twigs or trunks, allowing the pupae to survive periods of environmental stress and ensuring high survival rates.
