Systematic position: Thosea recta belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Limacodidae, commonly known as slug caterpillars. This moth is recognized as a significant pest in agricultural entomology, particularly in regions where industrial tea production is concentrated.

Host crops: The primary host of Thosea recta is the tea plant (Camellia sinensis). However, its polyphagous nature allows it to feed on a variety of other plants, including coffee trees and various woody ornamentals, causing extensive foliage damage in tropical and subtropical plantations.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Eggs are deposited on the underside of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae, which resemble slugs, begin feeding voraciously. After several molts, the larvae spin characteristic hard cocoons. Pupation occurs within these structures, often on the branches or trunks of the host plant, allowing the insect to endure periods of environmental stress.

Nature of damage and economic impact: The larvae cause significant mechanical damage by consuming the leaf lamina. Younger instars typically graze on the leaf epidermis, while older larvae consume entire leaves, leaving only the veins. This severe defoliation reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, resulting in stunted growth and a substantial decrease in the yield of harvestable tea leaves.

Management and control measures: Controlling Thosea recta requires an integrated approach. Essential strategies include:

• Frequent scouting to identify early larval instars and egg clusters.
• Deployment of biological control agents, such as entomopathogenic bacteria (Bacillus thuringiensis).
