Systematic position: Tibraca limbativentris is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive pests affecting rice production in South America, causing substantial economic losses across various agricultural regions.

Crops and damage: While primarily infesting rice (Oryza sativa), this insect can thrive on various wild grasses. Both adults and nymphs feed by piercing the plant tissue at the base of the stems, injecting toxins that disrupt vascular function. This leads to the phenomenon known as "dead heart" or "white head," where the rice panicle becomes sterile and fails to produce grain.

Biology and lifecycle: The life cycle consists of egg, nymphal (five instars), and adult stages. Females lay eggs in clusters on the leaves of host plants. The development rate is highly dependent on environmental conditions, with warm and humid climates accelerating the reproductive cycle. This allows for multiple generations per season, increasing the pressure on growing crops.

Economic impact: The pest is extremely damaging because it attacks the rice plant during its most sensitive growth stages. Heavy infestations result in significant yield reduction, as damaged tillers fail to yield grain. Furthermore, the feeding wounds create entry points for secondary pathogens, which can exacerbate the decline of the crop and complicate disease management efforts.

Control measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Tibraca limbativentris:

• Conducting systematic field scouting to monitor population densities.
• Maintaining field hygiene by removing weeds that serve as alternative hosts during the off-season.
