Description
The genus Tingis belongs to the family Tingidae, commonly known as lace bugs due to the delicate, reticulated structure of their wings and pronotum. These insects are significant pests that cause chronic damage to various ornamental and fruit-bearing trees through their feeding behavior.
Taxonomically, they are part of the order Hemiptera. Members of this genus are well-known for their highly specialized host plant relationships, frequently attacking species within the Rosaceae family. Their ability to colonize large areas often leads to persistent infestations if not identified early.
The life cycle involves an overwintering adult stage followed by successive generations of larvae. Eggs are typically laid in small batches on the underside of leaves and are often protected by a brownish, crust-like substance. Once hatched, larvae remain near the site of hatching to feed on leaf fluids, causing localized cell death.
The primary symptom of infestation is stippling, where the leaves develop chlorotic, bleached spots. As the population density of the lace bug increases, these spots coalesce, leading to severe leaf desiccation and premature senescence. The resulting loss of photosynthetic area severely impacts the vigor and overall yield of the affected plants.
