Trachykele metallic wood-boring beetle

Trachykele

Description

The genus Trachykele belongs to the Buprestidae family, commonly known as metallic wood-boring beetles or jewel beetles. These insects are specialized pests that inhabit the wood of various coniferous species. In both forestry and urban landscaping, they are recognized as significant pests capable of causing substantial damage to high-value trees.

The primary hosts for these beetles are conifers within the Cupressaceae family. They are most frequently associated with species such as Thuja (arborvitae), Cupressus (cypress), and Juniperus (juniper). While they often target stressed or weakened trees, high populations of Trachykele can also colonize healthy specimens, leading to severe decline in forest health.

The biology and lifecycle of Trachykele are characterized by their cryptic nature. Adult beetles are diurnal and feed on foliage, but the most destructive life stage is the larva. Larval development often extends over several years, during which they bore extensive galleries deep into the wood, feeding on the cambium and sapwood layers, which gradually disrupts the tree's vascular system.

Damage symptoms include the presence of wide, flattened galleries packed with frass (wood dust). As larvae mine the wood, the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients is severely compromised, resulting in chlorosis, needle drop, and eventual branch dieback or total tree mortality. This damage reduces the aesthetic appeal and economic value of ornamental and timber trees.

Effective management strategies include:

  • Conducting routine sanitary pruning to remove and destroy infested wood.
  • Maintaining tree vigor through appropriate irrigation and soil nutrient management.
  • Monitoring adult emergence using specialized sticky or pheromone traps.
  • Applying systemic insecticides during peak adult activity to deter egg-laying.
  • Protecting tree bark from mechanical injuries to prevent potential entry points for larvae.
